Subject: Reason for Outage – Network Intermittency (09/18/25, 13:51–15:21 EDT)

Dear Customer,

On September 18, 2025, between approximately 13:51 and 15:21 EDT, some customers experienced intermittent connectivity issues on our network. The interruptions affected both Internet connectivity and connections to our Manchester, NH–based voice switch.

After investigation, our engineering team identified the root cause as a core router that was rebooting unexpectedly. Each reboot caused our routing protocol (OSPF) to rapidly re-converge, resulting in brief but repeated interruptions to network traffic.

Troubleshooting the issue proved challenging, as the repeated reboots and routing reconvergence temporarily locked network engineers out of the equipment. This extended the time needed to isolate the root cause and stabilize the device.

The affected hardware appears to have been impacted by a firmware issue and memory leak. The router has been upgraded to the vendor’s recommended firmware, and traffic flows are now operating normally. We are continuing to monitor the device closely and have taken steps to prevent recurrence.

Preventive Actions

  • Firmware upgrades and stability patches will be applied to the affected router.
  • Additional monitoring thresholds are being implemented to detect abnormal reboot behavior earlier.
  • Remote management access paths are being adjusted to ensure network engineers maintain access to equipment during routing reconvergence.

We apologize for any disruption this caused and appreciate your patience while we worked to restore stability.

Sincerely,
Peregrine Networks (Network Operations Center)
